Bikepacking Routes, Gear & Inspiration: California Edition

To get the most out of bikepacking Southern California you need four main things: great weather, a stellar route, an awesome bike and cool gear. The weather in this part of California is typically sublime, though you sometimes must contend with wind and heat, but the other three items are firmly under your control. When you find a spectacular route it can be hard to contain your excitement. You know you will be able to tap into some great time in the saddle, experience some wonderful scenery and enjoy the beauty of nature. Santa Catalina Island not only has all of this, but it also has some interesting wildlife, including bison, fox and eagles. Nearly the entire island is dirt roads or single-track. There is good camping on the island as well as miles and miles of trail. A second solid option is Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, 40 miles east of San Diego. This area has over 100 miles of single-track and is ideal for a single day of riding or a long weekend.

The Value of a Strong Bike

As important as the route is the bike you choose to bring with you on a bikepacking adventure. If you are tackling challenging routes, a fat tire bike will offer the best combination of durability and ruggedness. You will be able to handle everything from sand to dirt to gravel to mud. This means the deserts and the mountains are open to your adventures. Sixthreezero bicycles in the fat tire category have many essential features:

  • 4-inch wide tires that enhance contact with the road
  • Ergonomic design to decrease soreness after a tough ride
  • Synthetic leather grips to increase safety on turns and jumps
  • A durable frame to absorb shocks

You can customize your bike to add features you crave such as adding a basket or box attachment to carry more gear. You can build your bike for more comfort or add features to increase performance. When you leave the pavement, you want a bike you can depend on.

The Benefits of the Right Gear

Whether you are heading out for a long day or spending a couple of nights on the trail, you want to equip yourself with the necessary gear. You will be able to carry the most in panniers that slide over the bike of your bike. These items are waterproof and are a safe way to carry extra gear as long as they are installed and balanced properly. Another option is to install a rear rack on the back of the bike; this allows you to add to your carrying capacity. With these items, you should be able to carry some camping gear for a warm and comfortable night in the bush. In addition to extra clothing and perhaps some food, you will want to consider carrying a bike repair kit with a pump, extra inner tubes, tire levers and patching materials. Water bottles are essential to keep you hydrated. Now is the time to look for women’s and men’s bikes for sale for a bikepacking adventure.
